UN Country Team in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh the UN Country Team (UNCT) is comprised of 12 resident UN agencies, funds and programmes and IOM, convened under the UN Resident Coordinator (RC). For information on individual UNCT members, please scroll over the relevant link. The UNCT meets at regular intervals, generally once each month, under the chairmanship of the UN Resident Coordinator to discuss and decide on issues of common interest. Heads of Agencies are responsible for overall oversight and policy decisions for their respective agencies and the UNCT meetings serve as a forum for inter-agency discussions aimed at optimizing and harmonizing the UN System’s synergies at country-level. The UNCT is supported by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and inter-agency thematic groups as required.

UNDAF Action Plan 2012-2016 Signed

Dhaka, 12 January 2012: The UNDAF Action Plan 2012-2016, the country’s first common operational plan of the UN System, was signed and endorsed by the Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry of Finance and the UN Country Team on 12 January 2012. Mr. Iqbal Mahmud, Secretary, ERD, signed the UNDAF Action Plan on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh and Mr. Neal Walker, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, signed on behalf of the UN System.

International Human Rights Day 2011

Dhaka, 10 December 2011: On December 10, the National Human Rights Commission led Human Rights Day 2011 celebrations in Dhaka by organizing a program around the theme: “Working together to promote Human Rights: Giving young people a voice.” Held at Dhaka University, the program opened with a panel discussion on human rights activism with university students featuring NHRC Honorary Members Fawzia Firoze Karim and Nirupa Dewan as well as Iqbal Sobhan Chowdury, President, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists.

FAO Deputy Director-General visits UN joint programme on food security and nutrition in Barguna district

Barguna, 18-21 November 2011: Mr Manoj Juneja, FAO Deputy Director-General (Operations) visited Bangladesh during 18 to 21 November 2011. During his visit, Mr Juneja went for field visit in Bamna of Barguna district to observe activities on food security and nutrition for the poor, especially women and children under the development project, jointly implemented by three UN agencies – UNICEF, WFP and FAO, funded by the Spanish Government.

UN Secretary-General’s Town Hall meeting with UN Staff

Dhaka, 14 November 2011: On 14th November 2011, the UN Secretary General had the opportunity to meet and address UN Staff in Bangladesh . In his initial remarks, the Secretary General informed staff that the primary purpose of his visit is to showcase the impressive progress Bangladesh has made in the leadership and advancement of women’s and children’s health. The Secretary General also responded to staff questions on inter-agency staff mobility, continued promotion of human rights and global progress on UN reform. In his private discussions with Neal as Resident Coordinator, the SG mentioned that his visit was ‘excellent’.

UN Secretary General’s Visit to Bangladesh 13-16 November 2011: Showcasing Bangladesh’s Achievements in Women and Children’s Health

Dhaka, 13-16 November 2011: UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon visited Bangladesh on 13 November for a three day visit as part of three-country tour to South-East Asia. A key objective of his visit was to showcase the progress and leadership of these countries in advancing women’s and children’s health in the context of the “Every Woman Every Child” effort he initiated in 2010. Challenges, Opportunities and Action in a World of 7 Billion

Dhaka, 26 October 2011: Release of the State of World Population Report 2011

UNFPA’s annual flagship publication “State of World Population Report” was released on 26 October 2011 in Dhaka. The theme of this year’s report is “People and Possibilities in a World of 7 Billion.” The UNFPA Representative, Mr. Arthur Erken, handed the first copy of the report to the Honourable Minister of Planning, Air Vice Marshal (rtd) A.K. Khandoker.

United Nations Day 2011

Dhaka, 24 October 2011: In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories.

Common Declaration on Women's Political Leadership Marked the End of Regional Conference

Dhaka, 18 October 2011: A regional conference on South Asia Women's Political Leadership ended in Dhaka today following three days of intensive discussion on issues related to women's empowerment in the socio-political arena. The closing ceremony was marked by a common declaration on Women's Political Leadership in South Asia which underlined the importance of the principles of diversity, non-discrimination and gender equality as basic human rights and recognised the need for continuing advocacy for change and networking in the region regarding role of women's participation in politics.

Dhaka Conference Ends with Call for Comprehensive National Strategy on Social Protection

Dhaka, 11 October 2011: Dhaka Conference on 'Scaling Up Social Protection in Bangladesh: Providing Ladders Out Of Poverty and Social Safety Nets' ended with a call for the formulation of a national strategy to widen coverage and strengthen social protection system and a comprehensive Road Map for the scaling up of social protection schemes that combine both protection from and promotion out of poverty.

UNDAF Signing Ceremony 2011

Dhaka, 1 June 2011: Following a long and consultative process, the UN Country Team and the Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry of Finance, signed and endorsed Bangladesh’s new UNDAF 2012-2016 at the UNDAF Signing Ceremony on 1 June 2011. Mr. Neal Walker, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, signed the UNDAF on behalf of the UN System and Mr. M. Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Secretary, ERD, signed on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh. The ceremony was also attended by the Representatives of UN agencies in Bangladesh (UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, WFP, FAO, ILO, IOM, UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNHCR, UNIC, WHO and UN Women).
