UN will Showcase Bangladesh’s Achievements: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon |
|
|
Dhaka, 16 November 2011: UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon visited Bangladesh on 13 November for a three day visit as part of three-country tour to South-East Asia. A key objective of his visit was to showcase the progress and leadership of these countries in advancing women’s and children’s health in the context of the “Every Woman Every Child” effort he initiated in 2010.
In Bangladesh, the UN Secretary-General visited a community clinic in the north-eastern region, where community health workers are being trained by a government-led effort to drastically increase the number of pregnant women assisted by a skilled birth attendant during childbirth.
Speaking at a ‘courtyard meeting’ with expectant mothers at Mobarakpur, a remote village of Moulvibazar District, on 15th November the UN Secretary-General said that the UN wants to showcase to the world Bangladesh’s achievement in the field of child and maternal health. |
| “I am very impressed to see the remarkable achievement of Bangladesh government in reducing child and maternal mortality rates. The government is doing an excellent job,” Mr. Ban Ki-moon said.
During three day visit to Bangladesh, Mr. Ban Ki-moon met with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other senior ministers in her cabinet and the Leader of the Opposition. He also met with private sector leaders on women’s and children’s health.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon spoke at the inaugural session of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) conference in Dhaka on 14th November 2011.
In Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, he visited the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research (icddr,b), one of the premium health research institute in Bangladesh. It developed the Oral Rehydration Solution, which is considered one of the most significant medical breakthroughs of the 20th century. The hospital affiliated with the Centre receives 120,000 patients a year, two thirds of whom are children.
The Secretary-General paid tribute to the contribution of Bangladesh to United Nations peacekeeping efforts by visiting the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT). He also met with the families of those peacekeepers who perished in the line of duty.
The Secretary-General gave a public address at the University of Dhaka, where he was also bestowed an honorary degree. |
