International Human Rights Day 2011

Dhaka, 10 December 2011: On December 10, the National Human Rights Commission led Human Rights Day 2011 celebrations in Dhaka by organizing a program around the theme:  “Working together to promote Human Rights: Giving young people a voice.”  Held at Dhaka University, the program opened with a panel discussion on human rights activism with university students featuring NHRC Honorary Members Fawzia Firoze Karim and Nirupa Dewan as well as Iqbal Sobhan Chowdury, President, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists.

Participants then enjoyed the rights-themed composition of Rabindranath Tagore, “Tasher Desh,” performed by the cultural group of Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK). Following brief remarks by NHRC Full Time Member Kazi Reazul Hoque and Honorary Member Niru Kumar Chakma, the program continued with speeches by a distinguished panel of guests.Hon’ble Justice Imman Ali, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, presented the keynote speech, “Human Rights: Rights of Children,” highlighting the continuing challenges and critical need to protect and defend the rights of the youngest and often most vulnerable segments of society.  H.E. Anneli Lindahl Kenny, Ambassador of Sweden, Guest of Honor, addressed the importance of empowering youth to become capable and effective rights’ advocates. She stressed the vital role of education in securing human rights, particularly for girls and young women.Mr. Neal Walker, UN Resident Coordinator, also attended as Guest of Honor.  Mr. Walker emphasized the importance of youth activism in Bangladesh, considering that more than 70 percent of Bangladeshis are under the age of 30.  He noted that the NHRC’s efforts to bring the concept of human rights to this incredibly dynamic part of Bangladesh’s population are “right on target.”Chief Guest Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, offered his congratulations to the NHRC on the occasion and noted the ongoing efforts of the Government to protect human rights.Following remarks by Prof. Dr. Mizanur Rahman, NHRC Chairman, certificates of appreciation were presented to participants in the Human Rights Day 2011 Art Competition.  Paintings, drawings, essays, and slogans, all reflecting the meaning of human rights to young people, were on display at the venue.Just prior to the start of the program, several hundred university students, clad in Human Rights Day 2001 T-shirts and caps, gathered for a rally, marching from the National Museum to Dhaka University’s TSC Auditorium.
